What Steve Bruce did before Tottenham's loss to Newcastle that led to victory over Spurs

Under pressure Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce turned to his former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for advice ahead of picking up a surprise three points against Tottenham at the weekend, according to reports.

The Magpies travelled to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as one of just two clubs that had lost both of their opening Premier League games of the season, with the fans becoming increasingly impatient with matters both on and off the field.

However, Magpies fans left the stadium in jubilant mood after Joelinton's 27th minute goal was enough to see them take all three points from the game and inflict the first loss of the season onto Mauricio Pochettino's men.

According to the Athletic , Bruce, who was only appointed at St James' Park this summer, turned to Alex Ferguson in order to try and help and turn his fortunes around.

The advice given to the former defender by his ex-boss was said to be to "keep his head down and get on with it."

Bruce wasn't a popular choice among fans when he replaced the outgoing Rafa Benitez in the summer, the poor start to the season only increased the unrest amongst supporters.

Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham 'didn't play well' in Newcastle defeat

However, Newcastle put out a solid display, with Spurs unable to break down a determined defense after Joelinton had given the visitors the lead in the game.

Spurs will now look to bounce back from defeat as they have the short journey to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal in the North London Derby on Sunday, while Newcastle host Leicester City on Wednesday in a midweek League Cup encounter.
