What squad numbers are available to Man City's January transfer window signings?

The transfer window is just around the corner and while there is no formal interest in players from Manchester City, the speculation continues to be rife.

Throughout the course of the opening months of the season, City have faced questions over their forward department after they failed in their ploy to sign Harry Kane in light of Sergio Aguero's exit.

Irrespective of their failure to secure a replacement, the Blues are coping well, currently sitting top of the Premier League table going into the busy Christmas schedule.

Erling Haaland continues to be a name linked with a move to the Etihad as the Norwegian powerhouse amid his incredible goalscoring form for Borussia Dortmund.

But what numbers are available to any potential new signing at City?

With the youngsters' involvement in the Papa John's trophy, as well as their recent cameos in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, a lot of unfamiliar numbers have become occupied.

James McAtee has recently been included in Pep Guardiola's matchday squads and came on in their win over Everton. The 19-year-old wears the 87 whilst Cole Palmer dons the number 80 for City.

In the last three winter transfer windows, there have been no marquee signings on the first-team front but it can't be ruled out that in light of the recent injury troubles that there won't be any additions through the door.

Following Jack Grealish's £100m move from Aston Villa, he took over the 10 which was previously worn by the Argentine icon, Aguero, before his move to Barcelona.

However, should a goalkeeping addition enter the fray, it could see the number one jersey occupied with Ederson currently holding the number 31.

Traditionally, strikers occupy the number nine but any forward additions will have to look elsewhere with Gabriel Jesus occupying that spot since his arrival.

For any defensive signings, namely centre-back, the number four is currently available after Vincent Kompany's departure following the dramatic title win in 2019.

Phil Foden has the highest squad number (47) out of the regular first team regulars as he continues to flourish under the Spanish coach.

Prior to Raheem Sterling's return to form, he had been linked with a move away from Manchester with Barcelona the reported destination but in the reports, the Englishman was only set to depart if a suitable replacement was found.

Should he depart, it would leave the number seven vacant but with his recent resurgence in form, it looks unlikely Guardiola will relinquish his services too easily.

One player heavily linked with an exit is Ferran Torres. The Spaniard is currently recovering from a foot injury but it hasn't put off Xavi's side as they look to bolster their ranks as they begin their rebuilding process.

He currently wears the number 21 shirt but he has only managed 43 appearances in the City blue since his move from Valencia in the summer of 2020.
