What sports are in the Olympics? Full list including new additions for Tokyo 2020

The latest edition of the Olympic Games are finally here, having been 12 months due to the global pandmeic.

The coronavirus has done its best to prevent the largest sporting event on the planet from taking place but Tokyo, Japan is ready to welcome the world for 18 days of wall-to-wall action, beginning on Wednesday, July 21 and ending on Sunday, August 8.

Fears remain regarding the safety of the Games, with Monday seeing the first competitors to test positive for COVID-19 in the athletes' village - two South Africa footballers.

Team GB suffered a scare last week when six athletes and two staff members were required to self-isolate after being identified as close contacts with a fellow passenger, who tested positive, on their entry flight to Japan.

They have now resumed training and will be hoping to help replicate the team's second-place medal finish four years ago.

The likes of Nicola Adams, Mo Farah and Max Whitlock each picked up one of Team GB's 27 gold medals in Rio, Brazil in 2016 - only fewer than the United States' 46.

Skateboarding will be one of four new sports introduced in Tokyo (PA)

How many gold medals do you think Team GB will rack up? Comment below.

In 2015, the Tokyo organising committee chose to bring in karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, along with the return of baseball and softball.

Upon confirming the additions, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement: "We want to take sport to the youth. With the many options that young people have, we cannot expect any more that they will come automatically to us.

"We have to go to them. … Taken together, the five sports are an innovative combination of established and emerging, youth-focused events that are popular in Japan and will add to the legacy of the Tokyo Games."

Each Olympiad, extra sports can be added to the core set.

At Rio 2016, golf and rugby returned to the lineup.

For Paris 2024, breakdancing, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing will be included.
