What Solskjaer said about James Garner following his Manchester United debut

Manchester United have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future - and the young stars coming out of the academy is one of them.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have forged a place for themselves in the first team in recent years, with players like Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood leading the next charge.

And James Garner will be hoping to have a similar impact in the coming seasons. The young midfielder is highly rated by the coaching staff at United.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the club in the Premier League win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in 2019, coming on as a late replacement for Fred.

Though he did not get much time on the pitch, what Solskjaer said after the game will bode well for the youngster moving forward.

"I believe he's got the chance to have a great future," Solskjaer said. "He knows we believe in him, we've got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick.

"I know he's young and I know it's not fair on kids to compare to great players like Michael was, but he's the same mould, he plays simple passes, plays through the lines.

"You're at Man United, so Michael had the pressure of coming in after Roy Keane, that's just the way it is at Man United.."

Garner currently sees his way to a starting role blocked by a number of first-team regulars. Scott McTominay has forced himself into contention for a starting berth, Fred has enjoyed a strong season, and Nemanja Matic has had something of a renaissance over the last few months.

It would not be surprising if Garner was viewed as a long-term replacement for the Serbian midfielder, who agreed a one-year extension to his current contract recently.

Patience may be required for Garner to make the step up to a first-team regular at United, but he knows that the manager has faith in his ability to make the grade.
