What Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling said when challenged to wear Ilkeston Town shirt on Soccer Saturday

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling has been challenged to wear an Ilkeston Town shirt live on Soccer Saturday.

Robins fan David Robinson, 39, Tweeted the host, saying he would immediately donate £2,000 to the Prostate Cancer UK charity if Mr Stelling accepted.

Mr Robinson came up with the idea to coincide with when Ilkeston taken on Mr Stelling's beloved Hartlepool United in an FA Cup fourth round qualifying match on Saturday (October 24).

"I would have sent to the Sky studios an Ilkeston home shirt with, perhaps, 'Stelling, Ilkeston's number 1 fan' on the back," said Mr Robinson, a heating engineer, who lives in Long Eaton.

Mr Stelling replied to Mr Robinson's Tweet, explaining why he was unable to take part in the challenge.

The presenter wrote: "Sadly not allowed to wear football shirts on the show as a) not allowed to show bias towards any team and b) would be an affront to most decent people to show off my increasingly big belly in polyester top!"

Mr Robinson replied: "I fully understand. I will donate £500 to Prostate Cancer, thanks to you being kind enough to reply and because it’s such a worthy cause. I’m sure many more supporters will also."

"What a gentleman," Mr Stelling, an ambassador who has raised more than £1m for the charity, wrote back. "I hope you enjoy the game (though obviously not too much!)"

Mr Robinson told Nottinghamshire Live that a friend's family member had the illness.

"It’s a massive issue for men, that is why there’s a lot of football promotion around the charity and the fundraising," said dad-of-one Mr Robinson.

"It was something I was going to do anyway, maybe on a smaller scale.

"It all seemed to fit and come together - an everything for a reason scenario. I was always going to make a donation to the charity.

"When thinking about it I tried to get some beneficial exposure for the club, certainly not for myself but the club I support and the charity as well.”

The FA Cup fourth round fixture at Ilkeston's New Manor Ground kicks off at 3pm.

The FA has announced the fixture will be shown live by the BBC, via BBC iPlayer, its red button service and the BBC Sport website and app.
