Shop owner's statement after sign fell on woman leaving her in hospital

A business owner has responded to the news that a sign outside his shop fell onto a woman's head, leaving her in hospital.

The woman, who has not been named, was rushed to Southmead Hospital with a serious head injury yesterday (September 4).

The incident happened at around 1.40pm on the Clifton side of the main road. Eye-witnesses said the sign above the wardrobe and fitted furniture store Infiniti2 fell onto a passerby walking along Whiteladies Road.

Co-owner of the store, Igor Kominek said he was away at the time.

“I was at a meeting and had a call from the store to say what had happened,” said Mr Kominek.

“I came back and found the sign leaning up against the side, but the lady had been taken to hospital. I really hope she is ok,” he added.

“We have only just taken over this store, just five months ago, so I don’t know what has happened with this sign."

The woman suffered serious head injuries, and is understood to have been knocked unconscious by the blow.

Lori Taylor - a trained first aider - rushed in to help the woman.

She said: “I was walking along Whiteladies Road and a small crowd had just gathered."

'It was such a horrendous thing'

"There were a couple of cyclists who were helping a lady on the floor.

“She had suffered a bad head injury, there was blood everywhere.

“The entire shop signage was on the floor - it was made of wood with metal fixings that were also there. It had snapped in two,” she added.

“They had put her in the recovery position and we waited for the ambulance. She was unresponsive - it was just awful.

“It was such a horrendous thing."

A spokesperson for  South Western Ambulance Trust  confirmed the woman suffered head injuries.

“SWASFT were called a 1.40pm to Whiteladies Road, Clifton after it was reported a sign had fallen on a lady,” she said.

“Paramedics treated the lady on scene and took her onto hospital for further treatment,” she added.
