What Sheffield United's £20m bid for Oli McBurnie means for Swansea City's pursuit of Chelsea's Kasey Palmer

Swansea City are understood to still be mulling over an improved offer for Oli McBurnie, in a move that could have a profound impact on their transfer activity this summer.

There's a lot to consider as although the mooted £20m would almost certainly leave Swansea on a better financial keel, getting a replacement in would be no easy feat at this stage of the window.

But a departure for McBurnie could well have an impact that goes beyond Steve Cooper's attacking options next season.

As things stand, Swansea are running the risk of allowing young Chelsea midfielder Kasey Palmer to slip through their fingers, but McBurnie's sale could potentially give them the financial power to change that.

Swansea are hugely keen on bringing the midfielder on board, with Steve Cooper doing his best to sell the club and their ambitions to the player himself, who's understood to be interested in the move and excited by Swansea's brand of football.

Sources close to the player have added that Cooper has even told Palmer that McBurnie will be staying.

Should the striker now leave, it could well leave Palmer questioning Swansea's ambitions, and Cooper may have to doubly hard to convince him that the money will be reinvested properly into the team.

They would have to start with Palmer himself.

Swansea are believed to be reluctant to budge on their offer of a loan deal for the midfielder, but the player himself is determined to secure a permanent deal in a bid to give him a fresh start that will boost his long-term prospects.

It's created a stand-off between Swansea and the player's camp, opening the door to Bristol City in the process.

The Robins have already agreed personal terms with Palmer, and Swansea are running out of time to get a deal done.

A loan with the option to by next summer is still possible, but Bristol appear to be edging ahead of the Swans in landing the 22-year-old, and could soon confirm a deal.

The ball is currently in Swansea's court, and the sale of McBurnie is likely to add further pressure on the club to put their money where their mouth is and offer a permanent deal.
