What Shamrock Rovers man told his teammates about Johnny Kenny's Celtic return

Adam Matthews told his Shamrock Rovers teammates that Johnny Kenny may find returning to Celtic tough, and he must be patient in waiting for his opportunity.

The full-back, who spent four years at Parkhead between 2011 and 2015, joined the Irish side at the beginning of this year, not long after Kenny moved back to his parent club.

The striker scored 20 goals in 39 appearances for Shamrock in 2024. Kenny has since returned to Glasgow's east end and impressed in his limited minutes.

Indeed, the 21-year-old scored on his only start for Brendan Rodgers' men last season away at Aberdeen.

"He's done really well this season for Celtic when he's played," said Matthews [RecordSport].

"I spoke to a couple of the boys about him, and they were like, 'How do you think he'll do at Celtic?'

"He showed in Europe last year what he can do. Obviously, it's going to be tough at Celtic, especially with the strikers that they've got.

"But he's just got to be patient and wait for his chance. And like he has done when he gets his chance to do his best and hopefully score a couple of goals.

"He's going the right way about it, and you never know. It's going to be tough at Celtic, especially in the striker position. But he's doing the best that he can. He's started really well."

Kenny was one of three Celtic players who scored their penalty in Saturday's shootout loss to Aberdeen at Hampden.

The forward stepped up second and sent Dimitar Mitov the wrong way with a fine spot-kick.

It remains to be seen what lies in store for Kenny at Celtic in the 2025/26 campaign.
