Barcelona star Sergio Aguero's retirement could have a surprising impact on Arsenal.
Aguero announced that he would be hanging up his boots in a tearful farewell to the Blaugrana on Wednesday morning, less than six months after joining the Catalan giants from Manchester City.
The former Argentine international, 33, made just five appearances for the La Liga outfit as a result of injuries and health problems and was taken to hospital back in October after experiencing 'chest discomfort' during a 1-1 draw with Alaves.
Now, the ex-Atletico Madrid frontman has decided to call it a day on his playing career, a decision that could have huge implications on the future of Gunners ace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The north Londoners announced that Aubameyang has been relieved of his captaincy duties on Tuesday afternoon after the Gabon international had been left out of the squad for Saturday's 3-0 victory over Southampton due to a disciplinary breach.
Speculation continues to surround his future at the Emirates Stadium and Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta wasn't exactly emphatic in his response when asked if the 32-year-old could depart in the January transfer window.
Speaking last week, Arteta said: "Really, we have never discussed something like this, and when players are under difficulty - or the team is under difficulty - what we have to be is supportive."
One possible destination for Aubameyang could be the aforementioned Barcelona, who have previously been reported as holding an interest in the former Borussia Dortmund forward's services.
Spanish news outlet El Nacional claimed last month that the Catalan club are keen on the veteran frontman and Aguero's decision to retire, coupled with Aubameyang's fallout with Arteta could mean a deal makes sense for all parties.
The former Saint-Etienne centre-forward has just over 18 months remaining on his current deal in north London, signing a bumper new contract back in September of last year.
