What Samuel Umtiti has said about Man Utd transfer amid fresh links

Manchester United are reportedly considering a fresh bid to land Samuel Umtiti this summer.

The Frenchman was linked with the Red Devils as they chased a star centre-back last year before penning a new five-year deal at the Nou Camp.

But after a tough season, the Catalan club are considering moving him on as part of a refresh of their squad with United declaring their interest.

It has led to him again being linked with United, who are still in the market for a central defender as their next priority after completing a deal for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Umtiti initially fuelled United rumours last March when he refused to comment on speculation, only to declare he never considered a move to Old Trafford when his five-year contract extension was announced.

"I was asked if I wanted to stay or go to [United] but I didn't want to talk about that, above all because I was with the national team," Umtiti explained last June.

"I just said the word 'joker.' I don't know how that word is interpreted [in Spain], but you can interpret it as you wish.

"The priority was to renew here at Barcelona , as I have done. It's my home. It's a dream to play here, with the best players at, for me, the best club in the world. I don't see myself playing for another team.

"I am really happy here and I have everyone's confidence, so I couldn't leave. That's it.

"I'm not going to speak about the numbers, that's not my problem.

"I want to play football and win titles with Barcelona.

"I am playing for the best team in the world. I am not here for the money - it's important but I am here to win trophies. I look at Andres Iniesta as an example. He's won everything and I want to be the same."

Despite being adamant he did not want a move to Old Trafford last summer, things might have changed.

He struggled with a knee injury last year and was restricted to just 14 La Liga appearances, whilst his knock has sparked concerns at Barcelona which could see them seek a replacement.

They have been linked with a move for Victor Lindelof whilst they have not yet totally given up on Matthijs de Ligt, with the signing of a new centre-back set to move Umtiti down the pecking order.

The 25-year-old would no doubt be expected to play a prominent role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's revolution if he is tempted to Old Trafford.
