'What's the worst that can happen?' - Kym Nelson on his spectacular winner for Ballymena United

You may have wondered what goes through the mind of a footballer the split second before they fire home a spectacular goal.

Are they calculating their angles or the power needed to beat the goalkeeper?

Ballymena United's Kym Nelson gave us some insight into the scenario after his screamer won his side all three points against Crusaders.

The big midfielder is maybe not renowned for his goal scoring prowess, but his touch and finish past Johnny Tuffey was fit to win any game.

When quizzed afterwards about what he was thinking about as he latched on to the loose ball Nelson was very self-deprecating in his response.

"What's the worst that can happen," he answered with a wry smile.

"The strike was unbelievable, I don't think I've hit a ball like that in years, I'm just glad it hit the back of the net.

"I caught it sweet and I couldn't really believe it hit the back of the net. I was nearly running home."

Nelson clearly enjoyed the celebrations after his strike, but he is hoping the result at Seaview can give the Sky Blues a much-needed confidence boost as they bid to find some consistency in their performances starting with Friday night's visit by Linfield.

"We fully deserved the three points.

"We caused Crusaders problems from the start, created numerous chances and I think we should have gone in at the break two or three up.

"I'm so glad we managed to get the win, it's a massive three points for us.

"It will help us build momentum going into these next few games starting with Linfield on Friday.

"It's going to be another tough game, but I think we can really build on this win.

"The talent in our changing is frightening. Unfortunately we just haven't got the rub of the green this season.

"There have been silly wee mistakes here and there.

"If we can put that right we can climb the table.

"Monday night proves that on our day we're more than a match for anyone in this league."
