TV period dramas often feature a wedding scene in which the bride throws her bouquet for girlfriends to catch, as in Call the Midwife (set in the 1950s) and various Jane Austen dramatisations. My recollections don’t go back to the regency period, but I do remember the 50s, 60s and 70s, and cannot recall brides chucking their bouquets in those decades. I think this “tradition” has been learned from Hollywood movies and in fact only started in the last 20 or so years. Or is it an old tradition reimported, like Hallowe’en?
