Opening Friday:

"Hacksaw Ridge" (R): Mel Gibson's first outing as a director since 2006's "Apocalypto" tells the true story of an American soldier (Andrew Garfield) who saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun during one of World War II's bloodiest battles _ emphasis on the bloody.

"Doctor Strange" (PG-13): The Marvel Comics Universe takes a step into fantasy with this first installment in the adventures of the Greenwich Village neurosurgeon (Benedict Cumberbatch) who defends our realm from otherworldly evil. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton co-star for director Scott Derrickson ("Sinister," "Deliver Us from Evil").

In stores Tuesday:

"Star Trek Beyond" (DVD/Blu-ray): Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise scramble to survive on a hostile planet after their ship is destroyed.

"Bad Moms" (DVD/Blu-ray): Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn play moms who misbehave while blowing off some steam.

"Anthropoid" (DVD/Blu-ray): Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan star in this fact-based drama about an attempt to assassinate a high-ranking Nazi officer during World War II.

"Nine Lives" (DVD/Blu-ray): Kevin Spacey is a workaholic who is forced to appreciate his family after he's transplanted into the body of a cat. No, seriously.
