What’s on TV this week: Christmas Day sports, Kennedy Center Honors, NYE specials and more

Sunday

“Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” (Netflix): A precocious 5-year-old (Alisha Weir) fights the power at her boarding school in this 2022 fantasy tale. With Emma Thompson.

“The Witcher: Blood Origin” (Netflix): Our hero Geralt of Rivia is not even a twinkle in some distant ancestor’s eye in this new prequel to the fantasy drama.

“The Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade” (ABC, 10 a.m. ET): With Black Eyed Peas, Katharine McPhee, Maren Morris, Meghan Trainor, et al.

NBA Christmas Day 2022 (ABC, noon): A stocking stuffed full of basketball matchups, beginning with the Philadelphia 76ers vs. New York Knicks.

“Nickelodeon NFL Nickmas Game” (Nickelodeon, 4:30 p.m.): A contest between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams gets a goofy augmented-reality makeover.

“Call the Midwife Holiday Special” (PBS, 9 p.m.): Boil some water and fetch clean towels, the nuns of Nonnatus House are back in an all-new tale.

Monday

“The Madame Blanc Mysteries” (Acorn TV): The expat antiques dealer/amateur sleuth (Sally Lindsay) returns in a special holiday episode.

“Treason” (Netflix): “Daredevil’s” Charlie Cox plays a British spy whose past comes back to haunt him in this new drama.

“Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair” (Peacock): The pro wrestling legend nicknamed the Nature Boy is profiled in this new documentary.

“Family Film Awards” (The CW, 8 p.m.): Kid-friendly flicks and TV shows collect kudos at the annual ceremony.

“Kids Baking Championship” (Food Network, 8 p.m.): The competition returns with new episodes.

“The Year: 2022” (ABC, 9 p.m.): Robin Roberts and company look back on memorable moments in news and pop culture.

“Bake It ’Til You Make It” (Food Network, 9 p.m.): This new docuseries follows up-and-coming bakers to competitions around the country.

“His Dark Materials” (HBO, 9 and 10 p.m.): The fantasy drama based on Philip Pullman’s bestselling trilogy ends its run. With Dafne Keen.

Tuesday

“Chelsea Handler: Revolution” (Netflix): The comic and former talk show host is back in this all-new stand-up special.

“Jose Andres and Family in Spain” (Discovery+): The chef/activist and his offspring go gallivanting around the Iberian peninsula in this new foodie travelogue.

“Charade” (TCM, 5 p.m.): A marathon of titles recently added to the National Film Registry kicks off with Stanley Donen’s 1963 caper starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

“Ocean Emergency: Currents of Hope” (The CW, 8 p.m.): Prince Albert II of Monaco calls attention to the state of the world’s oceans in this new special.

“American Masters” (PBS, 8 p.m.): A new episode recalls the close bond that developed between talk-show host Dick Cavett and his frequent guest, comedy legend Groucho Marx.

“Chef Dynasty: House of Fang” (Food Network, 9 p.m.): Father-daughter chefs Peter and Kathy Fang dish about their lives in the restaurant game in this new docuseries.

Wednesday

“The Circle” (Netflix): The social media-inspired dating show is back for a fifth season.

“Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl” (Disney+): The voice cast of the smash 2021 animated musical takes it to the stage in this concert spectacular.

“The 45th Annual Kennedy Center Honors” (CBS, 8 p.m.): George Clooney, Amy Grant, Gladys Knight, composer Tania Leon and Irish rockers U2 are feted.

“The Gift: Kindness Goes Viral With Steve Hartman” (CBS, 10 p.m.): The journalist reveals how a little niceness can go a long way in this new special.

Thursday

“Burial” (Shudder): Can Russian commandos get Hitler’s corpse back to Moscow? Remains to be seen in this 2022 terror tale set during WWII.

“Doc Martin” (Acorn TV): The doctor is out as this veddy British comedy starring Martin Clunes offers its series finale.

“Rise of Empires: Ottoman” (Netflix): It’s nobody’s business but the Turks’ as this historical drama returns for Season 2.

“Popstar!’s Best of 2022” (The CW, 8 p.m.): This new special also surveys the highs and lows of pop culture over the last year.

“Restaurant: Impossible” (Food Network, 8 p.m.): Robert Irvine returns to save more restaurateurs from themselves.

Friday

“Chicago Party Aunt” (Netflix): That good-time gal is back in a second season of this adult-themed animated comedy.

“White Noise” (Netflix): The lives of a college professor and his family go off the rails in Noah Baumbach's 2022 adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel. With Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig.

“Wildcat” (Prime Video): Caring for an orphaned ocelot helps a British soldier cope with his PTSD from the Afghan war in this new documentary.

“This Place Rules” (HBO, 11 p.m.): Roving journalist Andrew Callaghan takes a deep dive into America's political divide in this new documentary.

Saturday

“Lizzo: Live in Concert” (HBO Max): The Grammy winner is feelin’ good as hell in this new special featuring special guests SZA, Missy Elliott and Cardi B.

“The Thin Man” marathon (TCM, 5 p.m.): Sophisticated sleuths Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell, Myrna Loy) are back on the case in six vintage mystery comedies.

“CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live” (CNN, 8 p.m.): Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen call the action from Times Square and Katy Perry and Duran Duran perform.

“New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash” (CBS, 8 and 10:30 p.m.): Elsewhere in Music City, Little Big Town, Kelsea Ballerini and the Zac Brown Band help ring in the new.

“A Toast to 2022!” (NBC, 8 p.m.): Co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager say goodbye and good riddance to the past year in this star-studded special.

“New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” (ABC, 8 and 10:30 p.m.): Ryan Seacrest hosts and Ben Platt, Billy Porter and Fitz and the Tantrums perform.

"United in Song 2022: Ringing in the New Year Together" (PBS 9:30 p.m.): Feast your ears on musical performances from around the nation in this new special.

“All-American New Year” (Fox News, 10 p.m.): Country music’s Brantley Gilbert headlines this new NYE special from Nashville.

“Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” (NBC, 10:30 p.m.): Ms. Cyrus hosts her second NYE special, ably assisted by real-life godmother Dolly Parton.
