Alpenbrevet, 9 August

So you think you're a fit cyclist? Put yourself to the test in this event, which travels through fantastic scenery. The toughest of the three courses covers 276km and five mountain passes with an altitude difference of 7,031 metres. The easiest is a mere 131km over three passes and 3,875 metres. Mountain bike and racing bike riders are eligible.

Brienz

Timbersport World Championships, 12-13 September

A chance to watch professional lumberjacks show off their chopping and sawing skills around the famous wood-carving village by the lake.

Brünig

Brünigschwinget, 26 July

The Brünigschwinget is one of the most prestigious Swiss schwingen (wrestling) competitions, and has been held on the Brünig pass for over a century. It is accompanied by traditional folk music, yodelling and flag waving.

Chästeilet-Mägisalp, 12 September

Just before saying farewell to the Alps, the farmers and cattle drovers celebrate and sell cheeses of different maturities at decorated stalls in front of the mountain storehouses. Holiday guests, friends and family are invited to the popular event, with folk dances, yodelling, flagwaving and food and drink on offer, followed by a procession of Alpine cattle decorated with flowers.

Hasliberg

Rivella Family Contest, End August/early September

A day for families to explore the Hasliberg and take part in a treasure hunt on foot, by cable car and on scooter bikes. At five different posts, the families get to meet Muggestutz, the Hasli dwarf, and his friends.

Hasliberg-Mägisalp

Dwarf Festival, July-August

Come and meet Muggestutz, the oldest Hasli dwarf, and his many friends on the Dwarf Adventure Trail, Mägisalp-Bidmi, which also features a children's play festival, musical entertainment, magic shows, dressing up and food cooked over open fires.

Meiringen Music Festival, 3-11 July

Music enthusiasts have been meeting in St Michael's church since 1960 to enjoy concerts that impress with their quality and intimacy, with many visitors coming from far afield. Many great musicians and world-famous soloists have given concerts over the decades.

Susten Pass - Follow the Säumer route, 16-22 August

Take part in a special one-week hiking adventure with a historical pack-horse train over the Alpine passes, like the traders in the Säumer traditions.

And ... Swiss National Day, 1 August

The Swiss involve everyone in celebrating their National Day - visiting children are sometimes given a candle lantern to carry in a parade, and every community, and often each hotel, hosts a firework display.
