What’s next for the Titans as LT Taylor Lewan faces suspension?

Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan is facing suspension for the first four games of the season due to violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

According to recent comments from Lewan, the left tackle has been working on a new diet and is feeling better than ever. This will come into play when Lewan does return, but the Titans are left to improvise to fill the void of his loss for the time being.

While Lewan is serving his suspension, the players forced to step up for the Titans will have to go head-to-head with players live Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, and play two important divisional games against the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here’s a look at what this all means for the Titans.

Next Man Up

While losing Lewan is certainly a negative, his absence could answer a lot of questions for the rest of the offensive line.

The most likely scenario will be fellow lineman Dennis Kelly sliding over to play in Lewan’s place. Offensive tackle Jack Conklin, who isn’t listed on any current injury reports, could man the right side.

The two were slated to be in a position battle for the starting right guard position, but that battle will have to be put on hold for at least the first month of the season.

Kevin Pamphile had a place in the competition for the starting right guard spot, but is probably out of the running for now. Pamphile will likely play a swing tackle role, serving as insurance in case Kelly or Conklin goes down, or to give them a breather.

The right guard competition will come down to linemen Corey Levinand rookie Nate Davis. David Quessenberry could also be pinned as a dark horse candidate.

Other Effects

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

The Titans could elect to keep an extra lineman. Last season, the team had to depend on Tyler Marz when injuries stacked up.

If the Titans do elect to keep and extra lineman, it would put a strain on other players currently on the bubble like tight end Anthony Firkser, wide receiver Darius Jennings and linebacker D’Andre Walker.

We could also see more two — or even three tight end sets. The Titans could also use Pamphile at left tackle and put Dennis Kelly in as an extra tight end.

The left side of the line could be regarded as the Titans’ stronger side. After all, Derrick Henry’s 99-yard touchdown run against the Jaguars came off the left side. So, not only is Marcus Mariota’s blind side seeing less protection, but the run game will be taking a hit as well.
