What's next for Outlander? Season 7, spinoffs and Diana Gabaldon's book 10

Season six of Outlander is on the way, season seven has been confirmed and Diana Gabaldon has just released the ninth book after a seven-year wait.

It's a great time to be a fan of the time-traveling historical fantasy universe but what's next?

To celebrate the return to TV screens in March next year, we thought we'd take a look at what's in store for season seven, whether there will be any spin-off shows and of course, what our favourite author and Outlander creator has to say about the tenth and final book of the series.

So what can we expect?

The as-yet-unnamed Outlander Book 10

With the ninth and penultimate book in the series, Go Tell The Bees That I'm Gone, now on shelves and already a best seller, fans' thoughts are beginning to turn to the tenth and final book.

So what does Diana have to say on the matter?

When asked about the as-yet-unnamed final book in an interview by Town & Country Magazine, she responded: "I have started writing that [Book 10], but I'm just poking away at it little by little, because there's so much interference from the book launch stuff going on that I can't work with my usual focus...

"I am working on book 10 though. It's just beginning to bubble, like the tar pits at La Brea [in L.A.], these rising bubbles and there's a lot of bones underneath."
Could those "bones underneath" finally be the answer to long-term mysteries such as Jamie's Ghost? We'll have to wait and see.

The prolific writer, who released her first Outlander book way back in 1991, also teased that the book might not be the last outing for Jamie and Claire, at a digital launch event for Bees, she told fans: “It depends on Jamie and Claire. If they’re not ready to die yet, I guess I will have to go on.”

What she did confirm was that the adventures of Lord John Grey (a spin-off series from the Outlander books) would go on in a new book she is planning to write, as well a new adventure with Jamie's parents in already revealed plans prequel to the books.

Season seven

The Christies will play a big part in season 6 - (L-R) Malva, Patriarch Tom and Allan (Starz)

Speaking at New York Comic-Con in a special panel on the hit show with stars like Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, and writer Diana Gabaldon, producer Maril Davis stated that filming for season seven is set to take place next year.

While show-runner Matthew B. Roberts also confirmed in a statement about season six being shorter than usual: “Dinna fash, we will then film an extended Season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

So we know filming is set to start next year, and it'll be 16 episodes, but what else has been confirmed?

Season 7 should be based on the seventh novel in Gabaldon’s series of books, titled An Echo in the Bone, but we know that other seasons have borrowed from other books so, seven may even take some plot lines from book eight but we can't be sure.

Whatever happens, it's going to be exciting, with Caitriona Balfe already confirming that the scripts for the first two eps are already in her inbox.

Speaking about season 7, Roberts added: “We can’t wait to get into the writer’s room and start breaking Echo in the Bone and look forward to giving the fans another season of this exhilarating story."

Book seven is centered around the Revolutionary War, which by then will be in full flow, we will finally get to see what side Jamie has chosen - his current one with the British or the side of the American revolutionaries.

We'll also likely get to see what becomes of Roger and Brianna, and whether they return to the future; Lord John Grey, who will also be making a return; and of course, Young Ian will also be playing a key part.

It's also likely we'll see the return of two favourites from the show, with Graham McTavish set to reprise his role as William 'Buck' Buccleigh and some of the cast heading back to Scotland once again.

Outlander spin-offs

Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch has also spoken openly about the idea, saying: “We think there’s a lot of opportunity in the ‘Outlander’ universe to have story extensions or spinoffs or sequels.

"We continue to look at that with our partners at Sony."

It's been widely suggested by fans that much like in Diana Gabaldon's book world, the ever-popular Lord John Grey (played by Dave Berry) could be the star of any spin-off, however, the recently announced prequel books about Jamie's parents could also provide ripe material.

What do you think? What are you looking forward to most in season 6 and 7?
