How lockdown could look when it's reviewed again in Wales

New lockdown measures announced by the Welsh Government on Friday will allow life to edge closer to normal for many people.

But the most dramatic changes so far may come in three weeks' time.

Speaking at the Welsh Government coronavirus briefing on Friday, First Minister Mark Drakeford announced that people will be able to meet outside with others not in their own household from June 1.

This is restricted to members of one other household and people will be able to travel up to five miles from their home in order to do so.

But Mr Drakeford referenced a number of other possible changes that could come into effect at the next formal review on June 18.

He said he wanted to give "an early signal to retailers of shops which have been closed" to use the next three weeks to begin the process of preparing to reopen.

"The final decision about whether these shops will reopen will be taken at the next 21-day review and will depend on the advice we receive from SAGE, from our scientific and medical experts and about what the R rate is in Wales," he said.

He said that only those shops which can comply with the two metre social distancing duty will be able to reopen.

Mr Drakeford said: "This is an opportunity for businesses to plan purposefully for reopening, in the same way local authorities have used the last review period to plan for recycling centres and libraries to reopen."

Formal guidelines released later on Friday also reveal a number of other options set to be considered at the Welsh Government's next review.

It said said it will look at increasing capacity for childcare and public transport to support a wider return to work.

In a boost for the housing market, it will also look at allowing people to move house safely.

Re-opening outdoor sites, including markets, sports courts, outdoor showrooms, outdoor museums, and facilities for non-professional elite athletes are also on the cards.
