What's next for former Shipstone's pub in Old Basford

A former Shipstone's pub which has been turned into a restaurant is set for a revamp.

Proposals have been tabled to extend the Horse and Jockey, in Mill Street, Old Basford, and create apartments on the upper floors.

The building dates from the 1960s and has already been turned into a pub-restaurant.

Contractor Michael Johal, 50, whose brother-in-law Sukhwinder Birk owns the building, explained the pub-restaurant was currently closed while the whole building is restructured and refurbished.

Explaining the concept of the eatery, Mr Johal said: "There will be a mixed grill, people can order Tandoori chicken, Indian food, and have a beer.

"To bring people to the pub we are offering this Indian twist.

"They can book the restaurant for their personal needs as well."

The new accommodation will be available for guests - such as people who may be in the area attending a wedding.

"We are trying to tick all the boxes so we can cater to everyone's needs," said Mr Johal.

"Obviously Covid has put a spanner in the works. We are thinking if we can get it done by Christmas or Easter next year it will be helpful."

The owners have been looking at the model operated by the Wetherspoon chain.

Steve Westby, 71, chairman of the Nottingham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), explained the Horse and Jockey was initially a Shipstone's pub and was later taken over by the Castle Rock brewery.

"It was typical of the Shipstone's new-build of its time. At the back it had a large lounge which could be used as a concert room as well.

"It had a traditional public bar," he said.

Mr Westby explained it was built around the time the Basford Flats were constructed in the late 1950s/ early 1960s.

The project is to extend different parts of the building.

"Existing first floor residential accommodation and the new floor space at first and second floor level would provide six two-bed flats," a planning statement read.
