What's new: 'History of the Olympics,' plus Liane Moriarty, Dave Eggers

'THE GAMES: A Global History of the Olympics' by David Goldblatt. On the eve of the Summer Games in Rio, an English author and historian traces the modern history of the Olympics from the 1896 Games in Athens (241 "gentlemen amateurs" with waxed mustaches) through the notorious 1936 spectacle overseen by Hitler in Berlin, the Black Power salute at Mexico City '68 to the present day. (W.W. Norton, $29.95)

'TRULY MADLY GUILTY' by Liane Moriarty. The best-selling Australian author of "Big Little Lies" and "The Husband's Secret" returns with a new novel: Three couples and their children attend a backyard barbecue; the grown-ups get tipsy _ and then something goes terribly wrong. Moriarty examines the aftershocks when ordinary lives take an unexpectedly dark turn. (Flatiron Books, $26.99)

'HEROES OF THE FRONTIER' by Dave Eggers. From the author of "A Hologram for the King" comes this novel about an Ohio dentist being sued by a patient and split from her husband who decides to lose herself in the wilds of Alaska. Josie and her two kids hit the road in a decrepit RV called the "Chateau," the start of a picaresque story that is both funny and wise. (Alfred A. Knopf, $28.95)
