Protests took place in Istanbul, over the murder of a transgender
woman – and LGBT activist – Hande Kader who was found dead in August. Her burned body was discovered in a forest.
Despite homosexuality being legal in Turkey since 1923, reports of
harassment and abuse are common. In July authorities in Istanbul were forced to ban transgender and gay pride marches because of threats from ultra-nationalists.
Kader’s murder comes after a gay Syrian refugee who disappeared in central Istanbul was found mutilated and beheaded. Mohamed Wisam Sankari was found dead in the Yenikapi district in a suspected homophobic attack.
