What's happening with historic Burry Port bridge that's been removed

It was once the first thing that caught visitors eyes once they departed from a train at the station in Burry Port.

The 137-year-old railway footbridge running from either platform at the train station in Carmarthenshire dates back to the Victorian era.

But the eye-catching structure was removed last weekend and many local residents raised concerns that the small part of the town’s history would be lost.

However, Network Rail have confirmed the bridge is being removed as part of a £250,000 renovation which will see the structure strengthened, redecorated and replacing the current deck.

While the work is ongoing, passengers have been asked to use the pedestrian road bridge nearby.

The revamp was welcomed by local councillors and residents after a petition was launched to save the historic structure after the quality of the bridge fell into decline.

At the time of the agreement, Councillor John James said: "The bridge means so much to all of us and to have this guarantee of refurbishment is a terrific boost for our town.

"We wish to thank everyone involved from the initial decision making process through to carrying out of the work."

The removal of the structure was previously planned for February but was instead removed to the weekend of March 21 and is due for completion by the end of summer.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "The cost of the project is in the region of £250,000 which will be spent on strengthening the footbridge, replacing the deck and overall redecoration. All works are scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2020.”
