The Bears’ win over the Giants on Sunday was wild for a 17-13 game. Mitch Trubisky was phenomenal, then he fizzled. The defense made game-changing plays, but had some potentially game-losing lapses.
That’s how the Bears went from a 17-0 halftime lead to desperately trying to keep the Giants from winning in the final seconds — and they barely pulled it off.
Here are three important developments beyond the obvious theatrics of an entertaining afternoon:
Allen Robinson had a rare bad game. With less-than-ideal timing amid contract talks, Robinson had a forgettable afternoon. Not only did he finish with three catches for 33 yards, one of his five least-productive games as a Bear, he let a pass slip through his hands on the sideline for an interception by Giants cornerback James Bradberry in the fourth quarter.
The north end zone is a beast. New kicker Cairo Santos has done well filling in for the injured Eddy Pineiro and started the season 3 for 3, but ran into one of the most feared backdrops in the NFL with two minutes left. His 50-yard kick into the north end zone went wide left.
Ted Ginn was a healthy scratch. The Bears might be phasing Ginn out in favor of rookie Darnell Mooney, and he was inactive despite being healthy. “There’s a little bit of that,” coach Matt Nagy said. “Ted Ginn has been really, really good for us in a lot of different ways and he’s going to become an important part of this team as we go. It’s nothing other than just ... where we were at personnel-wise today.”
