What’s a quagmire? The Iran war accusation that sent Hegseth spiraling

  • Pete Hegseth lashed out during his Congressional hearing on Wednesday when California Rep. John Garamendi accused him and President Trump of lying to the American people, calling the Iran war a “war of choice” and a quagmire.
  • "You stain the troops when you call this a quagmire two months in, handing propaganda to our enemies. Shame on you,” Hegseth quickly responded. “Don't say I support the troops on one hand, and then a two-month mission is a quagmire. That's a false equivalation [sic]. Who are you cheering for here?"
  • A "quagmire" war is defined as an intractable, self-perpetuating, and costly entanglement where all involved cannot win, yet are unable to withdraw without significant losses.
  • Quagmire is a word made famous during the Vietnam War.
  • Hegseth is being questioned under oath by the House Armed Services Committee alongside Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, as negotiations to end President Donald Trump’s war remain at an impasse.
