Mr Johnson was chairing a virtual meeting of his Cabinet on Monday morning to discuss the plan, and will then announce the details to Parliament in the afternoon.

He is expected to host a Downing Street press conference at 7pm on Monday alongside key advisers.

As part of his road map, it's reported the "rule of six" will return in time for the Easter holidays, along with new measures allowing two households totalling more than six people to meet - giving greater flexibility for families and friends.

Socialising in parks and public spaces with one other person will also be permitted in a fortnight, when the rules are relaxed, to allow people to sit down for a drink or picnic.

What is the rule of six?

On Monday, September 14 2020, the Government introduced the 'rule of six'.

It replaced previous guidelines which allowed two households to meet indoors and for people to socialise outdoors in a group of more than six people from different households.

However, under the new measure, any social gatherings of more than six people were against the law, apart from a set of limited exemptions including work and education.

Police were able to disperse any such gatherings and fine individuals involved £100, doubling up to a maximum of £3,200.

The rule applied to any social gathering of more than six people in any setting - including indoors or outdoors.
