What Roy Keane said about taking over as Manchester United manager

Roy Keane says Manchester United were 'never' going to approach him over the vacant managerial position at Old Trafford, but failed to rule out a return to management.

The former Ireland international enjoyed a glittering playing career with United before going into management where he was in charge of Sunderland in the Premier League and then Ipswich.

Keane hasn't managed since he departed Portman Road a decade ago but did take on assistant manager roles at the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and, most recently, Nottingham Forest.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday before Michael Carrick took the reins for the win over Villarreal before their trip to Chelsea.

The Norwegian departed with United in eighth after the defeat to Watford stretched the recent run to one win in two months of Premier League action.

Ralf Rangnick has reached an agreement with Manchester United to become the next interim manager at the club. Mauricio Pochettino remains the preferred choice to take over the managerial hot seat on a permanent basis at the Theatre of Dreams.

"They were never going to call me, they were never going to call me, that was never going to happen," Keane said on Sky Sports.

"Listen, I would have no problem going into any dressing room trying to take control of the dressing room, I've managed in the Premier League.

"I don't think it would've been a problem for me but people tend to forget I have managed before. I did okay in the Premier League with Sunderland."
