What Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira and others have said about THAT famous tunnel bust-up

It’s 17 years to the day since Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira’s infamous tunnel bust-up, which became one of the biggest moments in Premier League history.

The incident occurred as Manchester United and Arsenal prepared to make their way out at Highbury ahead of their meeting in 2005.

As the cameras cut to the tunnel for the usual shot of the teams walking onto the pitch, Keane could be seen furiously shouting at Vieira, telling the Gunners captain “we’ll see you out there!”

It’s a moment that has gone down in history, and became a flashpoint in the two teams’ rivalry under Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Keane and Vieira have since put their differences aside and have been seen working together on plenty of occasions as pundits, although that incident at Highbury has followed over the years.

Here’s what some of the key players have said about bust-up.

Roy Keane

“I was never one for argy-bargy or slagging people off in the tunnel, but Patrick had threatened Gary [Neville] in the tunnel and I felt he crossed the line,' Keane said back in 2019.

“The key for me after that is don't be distracted by it. Focus on the match. The most important thing that night was to win the game, which we did.

“I always think these things look worse than what they really are. It summed up the rivalry.”

Patrick Vieira

"What started all this? Roy losing his temper!" Vieira joked while working alongside Keane as a pundit on Euro 2020.

"Before that? There was a rivalry between the two clubs and as an Arsenal player, you wanted to play against the best and at that time it was United.

"It was challenging, very difficult, and Gary here, one of his strengths was intimidating players.

"At that time, I was getting frustrated at the number of fouls on our players. As the captain, I wanted to put him under a little bit of pressure."

Gary Neville

"So before we got in the tunnel to go out for the game, coming in for the warm-up, he's chasing me up the tunnel screaming at me!" Neville said last year.

"So I go into the changing room and sit down next to Denis Irwin, saying 'Vieira's a bit annoyed, he's just chased me up the tunnel.'

"I sat next to Denis here and Roy was next to Denis, so Roy heard that."

Robert Pires

“Things started to get heated and I think it was because of me actually,” the former Arsenal man said in an interview with The Times last year.

“Gary Neville arrived and barged into me. I reacted in French because I was annoyed. It starts kicking off and at that point, Pat arrives. He said to him, ‘You speak too much, you. Shut up.’

“At that moment, Keane arrives. And he goes, ‘You talk too much as well. I’ll see you on the pitch.’ It was dicey between the two of them, tense. That for me was one of the best moments.”

Paul Scholes

"Vieira said something to Gary Neville in the warm-up, which was crazy really," Scholes said in 2018.

"A warm-up! Who's thinking about saying something or talking to another player?

"Roy felt that Patrick was trying to bully him. I don’t think any of us could be bullied."

Phil Neville

"Gary came in the dressing room and told everyone, and I didn't know that Roy Keane was actually listening," Neville said.

"You know, Roy getting his boots, having a drink and stuff, and Gary being Gary saying 'Vieira's said this, Vieira said that to me, he said he's going to do this to me, he said he's going do that to me.' A real drama queen."
