What Romelu Lukaku needs to do to revive his Manchester United career

Romelu Lukaku has flirted with a move away from Old Trafford in the last few weeks, with Inter Milan and Juventus reportedly interested.

And as the MEN reported on Thursday, the Belgian has become gradually frustrated and confused regarding his role and position under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But it’s believed Lukaku is still happy at United and, in the midst of the transfer speculation, remains calm.

Former manager Jose Mourinho utilised Lukaku in the majority of his games as United boss however since Solskjaer’s appointment, the Norwegian has opted for Marcus Rashford as his preferred front man.

Compared to Lukaku, Rashford offers electric pace and his movement off the ball also explains why he is Solskjaer’s first choice. Always mobile, Rashford drifts and weaves throughout the final third of the pitch, making himself available or otherwise creating space for a team-mate.

Lukaku’s turn of pace isn’t as sharp as Rashford’s however he does offer a different and unique approach that Rashford can’t. His hold up play is exemplary and in the past his clinical finishing has been among the best in the Premier League.

But crucially there’s one aspect of Lukaku’s game that is a chink in his armour and it hasn’t been the same since he departed Everton in 2017.

That aspect is his fitness. And improving it is the key to reviving his Manchester United career.

At Everton, Lukaku boasted a toned, slimmer physique and he reaped the rewards on the pitch. Since his move to Old Trafford, questions have been asked surrounding his fitness, and the number nine hasn’t always looked in his optimum shape.

Gary Neville brought attention to Lukaku’s fitness woes just 20 minutes in against Chelsea but his effort can’t be faulted, as he recorded a team best 14 sprints against Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea, in United’s 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Surprisingly, the statistics also show Lukaku has actually registered the fastest top speed at the club this season, with the forward reaching a speed of 34.9 km/h against Watford in September.

But ultimately, Lukaku ranks fourth lowest in the Premier League for distance covered per 90 minutes, covering on average 8.7 km per game, and that’s where the problem lies.

The season is drawing to a close and summer is approaching, and there’s no better opportunity than the coming months for Lukaku to work on his fitness to ensure he hits the ground running next season.
