What Romelu Lukaku did in first Chelsea training session after £98m transfer stirred memories

New Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku appears to be extending a tradition of becoming friends with the Chalobah brothers upon his return to Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian became the Blues’ record signing last week as he rejoined the club in a £98m move from Serie A champions Inter Milan.

The switch signalled his return to west London approximately seven years after his first spell as a Chelsea player came to an end with a permanent transfer to Everton.

Since then, former Anderlecht man Lukaku has had spells with the Toffees, Manchester United and of course Inter before sealing his move back.

Following confirmation of the deal, Lukaku had to oversee a period of self-isolation before he could be fully integrated into the squad. That is now over and in a video released by the club, the 28-year-old was seen getting ready for training with young defender Trevoh Chalobah.

With the two getting friendly, it appears that a tradition has been extended at Stamford Bridge with Lukaku having previously revealed that he was friends with Trevoh’s older brother Nathaniel, who was a Blue between 2005 and 2017 ahead of a permanent switch to Watford.

Lukaku also highlighted his delight at having seen Trevoh begin his Chelsea career with a bang having scored in the 3-0 opening day win against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The Belgian said: “I was speaking with Nate [Nathaniel] the other day after his brother scored. I got so emotional when his brother scored man.

“It got to me. Because Nate, his older brother, really like embraced me when I came because he was like we are one year apart and he really like took his time to show me around London.

“And when his brother scored, it was too much.”

Lukaku will certainly hope he can catch the eye in training alongside Chalobah in training as the pair remain in line to appear this weekend against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
