What role did Drake have in making Top Boy season 3 on Netflix?

It's finally time to return to Summerhouse Estate.

The new episodes of Top Boy on Netflix pick up as Dushane (Ashley Walters) returns from exile to his home in London to reclaim his throne in the highly lucrative drug market. He teams up with Sully (Kane Robinson), his spiritual brother, partner and sometime rival who is also returning to the same streets after his own form of exile – prison – comes to an end.

Awaiting the pair, however, is Jamie (Micheal Ward), the young, hungry and ruthless gang leader whose ambitions leave no place for Dushane and Sully in his new world order.

With hip-hop star Drake also having his name attached to the series, just what role did he play in the beloved series coming back?

Top Boy Season 3 (William Richards/Netflix)

Ashley Walters said on Sunday Brunch on Sunday (September 15, 2019): "It was put on Netflix after it was cancelled, a couple of years later, and we started to get a lot of interest Stateside.

"And then Drake watched it, which was weird, and we woke up one day, saw all this press over it [as] he’d posted.

"He had a picture of me and said, 'When’s the show coming back?' and I said it’s been cancelled and he said, 'Well, we’ll see about that'.

This is where everything changed in terms of the prospects of another season.

"Cut to about a year and a half later and he came back to the table with a deal and that was it," he added, "we went from there."

"He came back for the read through and he was in and out of London while we were shooting. But his whole thing was he was a fan of the show first and foremost, and he just wanted us to do what we did originally. He didn't want to have too much creative control."

Top Boy season 3 is available on Netflix now.
