The Delta variant is fast becoming more of concern across the globe, with cases shooting up as restrictions begin to ease.
Dr. Tony Holohan issued a warning on Thursday around the nature of this variant and the potential for restrictions to change, as they constantly remain under review.
He said: "We continue to keep all of the public health guidance under review.
“That includes all elements of the further reopening of society and looking forward to September and a return to education for students.
“In the meantime, avoid crowds, wear a mask, manage your contacts, keep your distance, meet outdoors where possible, and, if indoors, ensure that the room is well ventilated."

The Irish Government has made it clear that they have no intention of going backward and that as things reopen, that’s how they plan to stay.
However, there are numerous restrictions that have yet to lift and could be pushed back in line with rising cases.
Weddings
The number of people allowed to attend wedding receptions at the moment sits at 50 after a recent increase from 25.
It’s unlikely large weddings will be permitted in the near future with the ongoing threat of the Delta variant, and at the moment there is no talk of increasing guest numbers from 50.
Events
Indoor events, such as concerts, conferences and shows, in controlled environments with a named event organiser, owner or manager are not permitted right now.
Outdoor events are currently capped at a maximum of 200 attendees at the majority of venues, while a limit of 500 people is in place for venues with a capacity greater than 5,000 with appropriate protective measures in place - including social distancing requirements.
A full return of indoor and outdoor events will likely come closer to the time when the country has been fully vaccinated and therefore protected against new variants.
Leisure facilities
Things like circuses, play centres, amusement arcades, bingo halls, and leisure facilities all remain closed at the moment.
Until the situation is well under control, it’s unlikely these will reopen.
Nightclubs
All nightclubs and discos in Ireland remain shut under current restrictions.
While other European countries like Spain and Italy have reopened clubs, Ireland will be waiting quite some time as cases continue to rise.
Returning to the office
A return to the office will be welcomed by many people after over 18 months of working from home.
It’s hoped that a gradual return to the office will be seen in the not-so-far future, however, if cases continue to rise, that date will be set further back.
