What really happened with Princess Anne's Trump 'snub' - and it wasn't what it looked like

People on social media have spent the day showering Princess Anne with praise for her apparent 'sassy' response to being expected to greet Donald Trump .

A video clip from the , which was attended by a whole host of world leaders, seemed to show the Princess Royal holding back while the rest of her family met the President and his wife.

After the Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla shake the couples' hands and exchange small talk, it looked like the Monarch looks over to her only daughter and makes a gesture with her arm.

Many fans believed the Queen was "scolding" her for not joining the group to do the official greeting , to which the Princess just laughs and shrugs.

People on social media loved the clip, however guests at the event have since revealed this wasn't quite what happened.

According to The Times journalist Valentine Low, who was at the event, there was a bit of a mix-up from the Queen which is actually what caused the awkward moment.

Mr Low explained on Twitter , writing: "OK, here goes... Princess Anne: the truth. No, she didn't snub the Trumps. And she wasn't told off by the Queen.

"Instead the Queen, after greeting the Donald (and the Melania), turned to Anne to see who was next. But there wasn't anyone waiting: Trump was the last leader to be received by the Queen.

"Anne raised her hands in the air, laughed and said: "It's just me," adding a moment later "and this lot" as she pointed to the members of the household behind her.

"This excellent bit of sleuthing comes from the very wonderful Laura Elston of the Press Association, who is as impartial a witness as you could hope for.

"So, the truth is now out there. Not that anyone will pay any attention. Anne the Trump Snubber is a much better story."

Fans will probably be slightly disappointed to learn what really happened, after social media was filled with messages from people praising Anne's reaction to seeing Trump.

One wrote: "Princess Anne side-eyeing the Trumps. The Queen scolds her for not being in the royal receiving line and she simply shrugs."

Another added: "Feeling Princess Anne big time today. Haven’t loved her as much as since she won It’s A Royal Knockout."

A third commented: "I think I've fallen in love with Princess Anne."

The Royals put on brave faces amid the scandal surrounding Prince Andrew for the event, which celebrated the organisation's 70th anniversary.

Other guests included Boris Johnson , Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Angela Merkel and a number of other world leaders to mark the alliance's 70th anniversary.
