What Rafa Benitez said to Jordan Pickford in first phone call as Everton manager

Jordan Pickford has revealed he has already spoken to new Everton manager Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard was announced as Blues boss on Wednesday following Carlo Ancelotti ’s surprise return to Real Madrid last month.

The Everton goalkeeper, who is currently away on international duty with England at Euro 2020, admits he appreciated a return to the Bernabeu would have been a dream move for his former manager.

And when reflecting on Benitez ’s arrival at Goodison, he shared details of his first exchange with his new manager.

“With Carlo going to Real Madrid, it was hard for him to turn the job down so we knew there’s a new manager,” Pickford told reporters.

“Rafa’s the new manager and you’ve seen in his career the amount of trophies he’s won, his desire to win matches every time.

“I had a phone call, he rang me last night so it was nice to speak to him and he said enjoy the tournament and do well for England and see you when you get back.”
