What Queen was doing at midnight on New Year’s Eve - and why Kate Middleton wasn’t there

Most of us welcomed the new decade with one two many glasses (or bottles) of prosecco and a questionable rendition of Auld Lang Syne .

But for the Queen and other members of the Royal Family it’s a much quieter affair.

The Monarch spends the special day in Sandringham each year as part of her Christmas break, remaining at the Norfolk estate until the beginning of February.

She puts out an open invitation to all members of the Royal Family to join her for the celebrations, and it’s often those who weren’t able to be there for Christmas Day who take up the offer.

This year we know that the Cambridges are skipping the party as they are reportedly celebrating with Kate’s family, and Meghan and Harry are in Canada with their son Archie.

However it’s likely that Prince Philip will be at her side having been released from hospital, where he was being treated for a “pre-existing condition” a few days before Christmas.

Previous reports suggest that members of the family don’t go to bed until the Queen does, which means she basically gets to decide when the festivities end.

Queen’s former private secretary William Heseltine has previously confirmed this, saying: “Nobody felt it right to go to bed before the Queen did.”

On New Year’s Day the Queen goes to church with members of the family.

The Queen normally attends church on New Year’s Day before spending the afternoon relaxing, often going horse riding.

The Monarch will stay in Sandringham until early February, preferring to mark the anniversary of her father’s death there rather than at Buckingham Palace.

She also leaves all the Christmas decorations up at the Norfolk estate until after the anniversary.

Her father died aged 56 in his sleep on the estate in 1952 when the Queen was just 25.

She was on a trip to Kenya at the time, having to cut the tour short and fly back to the UK.
