What pundits have said about Man City's transfer window

Manchester City have had an action-packed transfer window.

First, all their attention went on signing Jack Grealish and they broke the British transfer record to pay his £100million buyout clause to bring him to the Etihad.

City then turned their attentions to signing Harry Kane, but were thwarted in their attempts to lure him away from North London by Daniel Levy, who proved as tough a negotiator as ever.

However, City are now leading the race to sign Cristiano Ronaldo — one of the greatest footballers of all time. The 36-year-old has called upon the services of his agent Jorge Mendes to manoeuvre a move out of Juventus, and it appears City have jumped ahead of those in the queue to address their centre-forward issues.

Unsurprisingly, pundits have had their say about Ronaldo and the transfer window in general for City, and MEN Sport have gathered a collection of some of the best bits:

Trevor Sinclair

Speaking about City leading the race to sign Ronaldo: "There's a lot of reasons why City fans should be excited about this because this is exactly what we have been looking for. A number nine who does the job of a number nine, and Ronaldo still does that job.

"I followed him for a few games at the Euro's, and he still had it. His urgency to get into the box, his movement when he was in the box, and how clinical he was. I think it works for Man City.

" Pep [Guardiola] has two years to win the Champions League; I think this could go a long way in helping them to get over the line. If you think of big-game players, he is probably in the top five players in the world. Of all the no.9s available, though it’ll cost a few quid, he’s worth taking"

Paul Dickov

Speaking about the signing of Jack Grealish: "It’s a lot of money, and I think we all know that, but I think Jack Grealish is not only one of the best midfielders in England, but one of the best midfielders in Europe.

"You look at his form for Aston Villa, the chances he has created, and it’s going to be pretty ominous for everybody else when you put him in a team with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, you could go on and on with these wonderful attacking players.

"For Jack Grealish being at the very top of his game already, being under Pep Guardiola, you can tell he is only going to get better."

Simon Jordan

Speaking about City's failed pursuit of Harry Kane: "[Harry Kane] must feel a little bit let down by Man City? Because they're the ones who want to mark his dance card... You might not have done, but their manager did, and Man City did themselves.

"While we are all in the same camp that £100million, £125million, £150million - they're all pretty grotesque — but the bottom line is they're the ones who marked his dance card.

"They're the ones who wanted to sign him, and they haven't been able to achieve something.

"He must have gone in the press, right or wrong, stupid or ignorant and felt that this deal was a done deal, that City were going to do what it took to get him."

Jamie Carragher

Speaking about City's decision to prioritise Grealish over Kane: "What I cannot get my head around is why City did not attend to their more pressing needs first.

"City already have so many attacking midfielders of Grealish's profile, Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, and if he stays, Bernardo Silva. Signing Grealish will not be the difference between City defending their title or finally winning the Champions League this season.

"Signing Kane, or a world-class striker capable of scoring between 20 or 30 goals this season, might be. That was clear in last weekend’s defeat to Spurs."
