What Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said about being told to leave Frogmore Cottage

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have responded to being told to leave Frogmore Cottage, their UK home. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed that they have been been asked to vacate their UK home, just weeks after Harry’s damning book Spare was released. In Spare, Harry makes a lot of disparaging remarks about King Charles and his wife, Camilla, as well as Prince William and his wife, Kate.

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said: “We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage.”

It means they will not have a residence in the UK, further weakening already-strained ties with the royal family, and will widely be seen as a reaction by King Charles to his son's book, which was also scathing about staff members in the royal household and how Harry felt they worked against him and Meghan.

How much are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle worth?

Although this is a very difficult question to answer, and any reports of royal family members' individual wealth and inheritances should be taken with a pinch of salt, there are several reports around which we can estimate at their wealth. Firstly, Harry and Meghan signed a deal with Netflix said to be worth $100 million (£83 million). They also signed a deal with Spotify said to be worth $25 million (£20 million). According to Forbes, Princess Diana left her two sons £8.3 million, from which they started to receive around £375,000 a year when they turned 25. It's also reported that the Queen Mother left Harry and William around £6 million in a trust.

Where do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live now?

Harry and Meghan live in a mansion in Montecito in California, said to be worth £11 million. Before their move, they lived in Frogmore Cottage. It is on a private road with large security gates and is reported to have nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms and an enormous seven-acre garden where they have chickens. Their grounds also contain a large outdoor pool, a tennis court, a tea house, and a children’s cottage for their children Archie and Lilibet – along with a spacious garage, and a guest house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Inside, there is a library, an office, a spa with a sauna, a gym, a games room, an arcade, a movie theatre, and a wine cellar.

Where is Frogmore Cottage and who owns it?

Frogmore Cottage is a Grade II listed two-storey house sitting in the north of the Frogmore Estate on the Windsor Estate. It was built in the 17th century by Charles II’s architect, Hugh May, and has been a royal residence since 1792. It is owned by the Crown Estate. Although it is difficult to put a price on its value, Harry and Meghan reportedly spent more than £2 million just in refurbishing it.

Where does Prince Andrew live?

Among the reports of the request for Harry and Meghan to leave their UK home have been those saying the house has instead been offered to Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. However, Frogmore Cottage is substantially smaller than Andrew’s current Royal Lodge home, which he still shares with ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York. Andrew has lived at Royal Lodge since 2004 and the property previously belonged to the Queen Mother between 1952 and 2002. Royal Lodge is a huge home with 21 acres of secluded gardens.

What does Prince Harry say about King Charles in Spare?

A lot. And it does not paint the King or several other members of the family in very good light. He repeatedly makes it clear he believes Charles put the interests of himself and Camilla above those of his son, particularly with a view to press coverage. He also gives an unflinching assessment of the Queen Consort, claims that Prince William physically attacked him and that the Princess of Wales had a fractious relationship with Meghan.

When is King Charles' coronation?

With the couple’s permanent UK base now gone, there will be speculation about whether they will receive an invite to the King’s coronation on May 6. Omid Scobie, one of the authors behind the biography of Harry and Meghan, Finding Freedom, said relations between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the royal family were at "an all-time low". He claimed a source said Harry and Meghan have been given until the summer, after the coronation, to remove their belongings. However, it was alleged they initially told they would just be given two weeks.
