What Prime Minister said about Nottingham man who starved to death after benefits were cut

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the case involving Nottingham man Errol Graham was ‘tragic’ and lessons would be learned.

Mr Graham was just four-and-a-half stone when he died in his flat in Radford.

His benefits, which included employment and support allowance were stopped after he had failed to attend a fit-for-work test.

The cause of his death was recorded as starvation.

The grandfather, who had suffered with severe social anxiety, had cut himself off from family and friends.

At his flat in Radford, there was no food found apart from out-of-date tins of fish.

The matter was raised during Prime Minister’s Questions by Labour’s Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood.

She said: “Last week, it was revealed that my constituent, Errol Graham, starved to death just months after the DWP stopped his benefits.

“His emaciated body was only discovered by when bailiffs broke his front door to evict him.

“The first priority of Government is to keep its citizens safe.

“How many more vulnerable benefits claimants will have to die before his Government starts to value their lives?”

Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Mr Speaker this is a tragic case and she’s right to raise it.

“We’ve allocated £36 million to improve safeguarding and decision making in cases like this, including the creation of a new independent serious case panel so that we can scrutinise and learn lessons from tragic cases like this, as well as improving guidance for staff involved.”
