What police have said about 'All Lives Matter' protest near Cenotaph in Bristol

Police have said their priority is 'maintaining public safety' during an All Lives Matter protest in Bristol city centre this afternoon.

Dozens of people gathered around the Cenotaph in The Centre for the planned protest just after noon today (Saturday, June 13).

The group of mainly white men can be seen holding banners which say 'All Lives Matter', along with an explanation about why they have gathered at the war memorial.

In follows on from a Black Lives Matter protest which took place last Sunday (June 7), which saw 10,000 people flood into The Centre and the statue of Edward Colston pulled down.

In a statement Avon and Somerset police have said: "We’re aware of the ongoing protest taking place at the Cenotaph in Bristol city centre today.

"We engaged with the protest organisers ahead of the event and reminded them of their responsibilities to make sure steps are taken to protect the health of themselves and others as the COVID-19 pandemic poses a clear and present risk to all our communities.

"Our priority is to maintain public safety at all times and we have an appropriate policing plan in place so we can do just this.

"We’d encourage people to carefully consider their own health and the health of their friends and family before deciding to take part in a gathering.

"Anyone who does attend should follow the Government restrictions and guidance, especially around social distancing."
