'What planet are they living on?' - Manchester United fans react to Real Madrid asking price for Raphael Varane

Manchester United have had a £50million bid for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane rejected.

United remain in talks with Los Blancos and will seek a compromise over the fee as the Spanish side value Varane at £80million despite him having just one year left on his current contract.

The Reds have a long-standing interest in the Frenchman and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was prepared to sanction a £100million move for Varane in the summer of 2018 but his value was well in excess of that figure at the time.

Madrid are now prepared to let the 28-year-old go this summer after signing versatile defender David Alaba from Bayern Munich on a free transfer even after news that veteran centre-back Sergio Ramos will be leaving the Bernabeu at the end of the month after 16 years with the club.

The 13-time Champions League winners have racked up debts of €900million and president Florentino Perez wants to squeeze as much money out of the Varane deal as he can.

United fans reacted to the news on social media, with many frustrated by Madrid's dealings.

Varane produced a stellar display for France during ther 1-0 win over Germany at Euro 2020 on Tuesday night as Les Bleus begun their bid for a third European Championship
