What Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang said about joining Real Madrid amid Arsenal quit rumours

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is being widely linked with an exit from the Emirates Stadium, with rumours of Real Madrid's interest in the forward once again surfacing.

The Gunners forward struck his 13th Premier League goal of the season in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday and, due to the lack of Champions League football on offer, is now said to be eyeing an exit from North London.

Turning 31 this summer and having just 18 months remaining on his contract, Aubameyang may feel he has one final opportunity to secure a big transfer - and it may be his last chance to fulfil a promise he made.

Aubameyang has previously discussed a move to Real Madrid during his time with Borussia Dortmund, having revealed he made a promise to his grandfather before he passed away.

“Before he died two years ago I promised him that one day I would play for Real Madrid,” he said to L’Equipe in 2016.

“My grandfather was from Avila, not far from Madrid. It’s what I said to him. I know it’s not easy but it’s something I keep in mind.

“I celebrate my goals with a cartwheel in honour of Hugo Sánchez. I’ve seen many videos of him on the internet and I’ve been following him since I was a boy.

“To play for Madrid or for another great club in La Liga would be a nice gift to my mother, Margarita, who is Spanish.”
