What Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has said about Granit Xhaka and the Arsenal captaincy

Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has opened up on Unai Emery's decision to appoint Granit Xhaka as the club captain.

Xhaka had already worn the armband in every match he's played this season but he has now been installed as the permanent captain.

It's a decision which has led to reaction aplenty from fans and former players, with many suggesting Aubameyang and even David Luiz should have been handed the honour.

However, Aubameyang is more than comfortable with the decision and insists that Xhaka is the ideal man to take Arsenal forward.

The 30-year-old, who is part of Arsenal's leadership group, also explains that he will do his best to help the midfielder lead the Gunners this season.

"He's (Xhaka) an important guy in the club. He is someone who everyone can learn from. He's a strong guy," Aubameyang told Sky Sports. "He is the captain because he deserves it.

"We (leadership group) will try to help everybody. Everyone can have bad moments but we are older and we will try to help the young players. We have a lot of young players coming in and they are playing well but they must continue. We can help that."

Arsenal have had a mixed start to the season but Aubameyang believes the current squad has the right make-up to be successful during the 2019/20 campaign.

"I think we have great character," Aubameyang added. "We are young but we are confident. I like the personality that each player in this team has. I feel very good and I'm sure we will do great things this year."
