What Phil Parkinson told Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips after crucial Oxford win

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has revealed Phil Parkinson was 'delighted' with Saturday's 1-0 win over Oxford.

A John Mousinho own-goal was enough to secure a crucial win for the Black Cats at the Kassam Stadium as they cemented themselves in the play-off places.

Parkinson's side now sit just three points adrift of the automatic promotion places and Phillips feels they have every chance of ending the season in the top two.

“I spoke to Phil afterwards and he was delighted, naturally,” the former Sunderland forward told Football Insider.

“I thought it was a good away performance. They defended the box with their lives. Everything you would expect from a team that is bang in form at the moment. Although, again, we got the rub of the green.

“The weather in the second half was horrendous and Oxford’s ground has the open end, the players did really well to cope.

“[It was a] Fantastic result for Phil Parkinson. [They have] Every opportunity of going up automatically if they keep performing the way they are doing.”
