What Petr Cech's surprise move to Guildford Phoenix means for his role with Chelsea

Petr Cech's decision to move into the sport of ice hockey has caught many football fans off guard.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper took on the challenge of a new career after signing for Guildford Phoenix in a surprising move.

But while his move starts a new chapter for the 37-year-old, it's not a case of the previous chapter ending.

Cech took on the role of technical and performance advisor at Stamford Bridge after hanging up his gloves over the summer, a position which is very still the main focus for the Chelsea legend.

A statement on the Chelsea club website said: "It has been announced on Wednesday evening that our former goalkeeper and current technical and performance advisor Petr Cech is to play competitive ice hockey.

"The 37-year-old will play as goalie (netminder) for Guildford Phoenix which is located close to where Cech lives. When his Chelsea Football Club schedule allows, he is ready to help them in their league games."

Petr Cech spoke of his decision to join the Ice Hockey side and said he was excited to take on this new challenge.

Speaking to the Guildford Phoenix website , he said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to play with the Phoenix to get the match experience.

"I hope I can help this young team to achieve their goals for the season and try to win as many games as possible when I have the chance to play.

"After 20 years of professional football this is going to be a wonderful experience for me to play the game I loved to watch and play as a kid."
