What Pep Guardiola told his Man City players at half-time and end of Liverpool defeat

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told his players they should not use social media to talk about certain incidents during their defeat at Anfield.

A ruthless Liverpool put the defending Premier League champions to the sword with a 3-1 victory to extend their lead at the top of the domestic table to eight points - while also going nine clear of their nearest on-pitch rivals.

Fabinho opened the scoring after six minutes with a thunderous 25-yard strike which came just 22 seconds after the visitors claimed they should have had a penalty when the ball struck Trent Alexander-Arnold on the hand.

VAR backed the decision of referee Michael Oliver and his on-field officials, with Bernardo Silva having also handled seconds before - leaving Guardiola gesticulating on the touchline.

The Reds then quickly put together a sensational move, which saw Alexander-Arnold switch the ball across to Andy Robertson before the left-back whipped in a curling cross for Mohamed Salah to head home and make it 2-0, while the third came via a brilliant Jordan Henderson cross for Sadio Mane to power home a header shortly after half-time.

Guardiola was an animated figure once again in the second half when he believed there was a further City penalty shout when Alexander-Arnold again handled, this time from a Raheem Sterling cross at close range.

However, VAR once more ruled the young defender had not committed any wrongdoing.

After the match he said: “I don’t have regrets, if the players know I’m not happy then I tell them but I told them at half-time and full-time: ‘Heads up guys, don’t use social media to give your thoughts about what happened in some departments. Talk about football and how good it was.’

“I’m uncomfortable because it looks like Pep is complaining but congratulations to Liverpool, 3-1, could we have done differently on the second, third one, is it a penalty, isn’t it a penalty?

“I don’t know what with all these ifs, you don’t know what will happen in the future."
