What Pep Guardiola said about his Man City future ahead of signing new contract

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has signed a new contract to extend his stay in the Premier League beyond the end of the season.

The club confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Guardiola had penned a new two-year deal with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Spaniard has put an end to any speculation he could walk away from City in May, after months of uncertainty.

Guardiola has never ruled out the possibility of extending his stay with City, although a lack of movement on that front created doubts whether he would continue in Manchester.

"I'm incredibly happy here," he said when asked about his future last month, amid links of a return to Barcelona.

"(I'm) delighted to be in Manchester and hopefully I can do a good job this season to stay longer."

He continued: "I've said many times, my period as Barcelona manager is over. There are incredible people who can be in charge.

"Ronald Koeman is an outstanding manager. It's over. I will come back to my seat to see my club [Barcelona], to watch a game, but it's done.

"I'm here, I'm incredibly happy here. I have the desire to do well. This is the most important thing. With the elections in Barcelona, hopefully, they choose the right person for the board to maintain the incredible club."

Guardiola's new deal will only further strengthen transfer speculation that has reemerged linking Lionel Messi with a summer move to the club.

The Argentine legend is unhappy at Barcelona and almost left the club in the summer, with City the favourites to land his signature.
