What Pep Guardiola expects if Man City don't win the Premier League

Pep Guardiola is expecting criticism if Manchester City fail to win the title.

The Blues have already clocked up one of the highest Premier League points totals - second only to their effort last year - and take a one-point lead into the final game of the season.

Having trailed Liverpool by seven points at one stage, Guardiola has been delighted with the comeback and has already told his players their job is done for the year.

However, reactions to the Champions League have shown him that the ultimate judge of success is trophies.

"It’s not going to change my opinion about what we have done but if you want more credit you have to win," he said. "We saw that in the Champions League: we won once but when you are out everybody destroys the team, destroys the club, destroys the manager.

"We know the world we live in and I know we’ll be judged – you have to win of course. We are travelling to Brighton and just thinking of trying to win the game, that’s the ideal situation and after we celebrate or congratulate Liverpool."

Guardiola is not used to the situation that lies ahead this weekend, having won all but one of his titles before the final day. City had the league wrapped up before the middle of April last season as they cantered to the trophy.

They know that the stakes are higher but the coach spoke of a happy camp that has prepared for one final league test against Brighton.

"We are in this position because we won a lot of games, 13 in a row, now we have to win one more in the Premier League.

"I saw the team relaxed, training good and smiling a lot, they are completely focused when we speak on the pitch or in meetings. It’s a game where anything can happen.

"There's more pressure because one mistake from our side, one incredible performance from the opponents, one mistake from the referee can decide the title. That’s why we have to be more precise or good in all the aspects we've been working on these last three years and try to win the game."
