Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola consoled Fred after the United midfielder reported that he was subjected to alleged racist abuse during the derby.
Fred, 26, was hit by a missile in the second-half of United's 2-1 victory and television images showed what could be possible racist gestures from a supporter. The video was widely circulated on social media.
The MEN understands after Guardiola completed his post-match press conference he saw Fred in the mixed zone area reserved for reporters to speak with players and approached the Brazilian. Guardiola compassionately cupped Fred's face and the pair spoke for around 30 seconds before the 26-year-old boarded the United team coach.
City chief executive Ferran Soriano also spoke with United director David Gill in the tunnel area and condemned the alleged abuse. Soriano is also believed to have assured Gill City would leave no stone unturned in dealing with the matter.
On Sunday, Greater Manchester Police arrested a 41-year-old man and a senior GMP officer said 'racism of any kind has no place in football'.
In a statement, the GMP said: "A man has been arrested after a video posted on social media showed a supporter making racist gestures at the Manchester City v Manchester United match at the Etihad Stadium yesterday."
United confirmed Fred and Jesse Lingard reported abuse of a racist nature. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "I've seen it on the video, it was Jesse and Fred and the fella must be ashamed of himself. It's unacceptable and I hope he will not be watching any football anymore.
"Fred and Jesse were taking a corner and I've seen the video, heard from the boys. We keep talking about it every bloody week. But he's been caught on camera, he should in my opinion never be allowed into a football ground again.
"Unacceptable. I'm sure City and the authorities will deal with it. We keep talking about it every week and it won't stop unless it'll have consequences."
When asked what an appropriate punishment would be, Solskjaer replied: "Why don't we educate him instead? It's not City's fault, it's his and he should be educated, that's my opinion anyway. It's nothing to do with Man City as a football club, no."
