What people think of CCTV set up at Nottingham's Victoria Embankment

Setting up a surveillance camera has been installed near a Nottingham war memorial has been welcomed by walkers in the area.

The temporary camera, located opposite the Victoria Embankment war memorial, is one Nottingham City Council moves around different parts of the city to where it is needed.

It has been placed high on a lamppost facing the memorial and its gardens, which were built after the First World War to honour the lives of those who died serving in the Armed Forces.

In a recent upgrade, The Great War Memorial was unveiled which features the names of all 13,482 from Nottinghamshire who lost their lives in the 1914 – 18 War, as well as civilian casualties.

However, the site has become a recent target for vandals such as quad bikers that have churned up the gravel in front on the main archways.

Residents walking through the famous beauty spot welcomed the intervention, arguing it made them feel safer and would hopefully act as deterrent for vandals.

"I run through here most weeks, so it's nice to see it there," said Sarah Meakin.

The 33-year-old of West Bridgford, added: "It just gives a sense of assurance. I'd like it to be permanent to be honest.

"The area is often wrecked by vandals damaging the war memorial, which is one of the finest memorials in Nottingham. So anything that helps stop that or leads to prosecution is a good thing".

Concerns from the ward's Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) were put to Nottinghamshire Police who then requested the council install CCTV, a spokeswoman for the city council confirmed.

Natasha Harvey, 38, of The Meadows, added: "The area is a lot quieter since they stopped cars coming through all of the Embankment. So it does provide some form of reassurance I'd say.

"I would like to see more of it along the whole Embankment. There's often speeding mopeds along here, it could be a good way to cut down on that."

James Martin, 29, of The Meaodws said: "I welcome it if it makes people feel safer. We need to look after the memorial from any damage I'd say."

A council spokeswoman added: "Following a neighbourhood meeting, the Neighbourhood Development Officer (NDO) for the ward was requested to look at getting CCTV.

"The camera installed is not new, but one that is moved around the city and is temporary for three months.

"It comes after anti-social behaviour was reported around the memorial, such as quad bikers as well as littering and flytipping.

"The funds for the cameras come from the wards."

Chief Inspector Alan Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We continually work in partnership with our Nottingham City Council colleagues to tackle anti-social behaviour and try to give our communities a better quality of life.

“We welcome every tactic available to us, including the use of technology, to achieve this.”
