What people forget about Liverpool squad as transfer rumours continue

As the Premier League kicks off this coming weekend, as always at this time of year, all of the talk is surrounding who will win the title, and whether Man City can be toppled.

Pep Guardiola's defending champions will start the campaign as favourites with Champions League winners Chelsea not far behind, but one side who seems to be getting overlooked is Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's men will come into the new season rejuvenated by the reintroduction of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip with the backing of a full Anfield behind them.

Liverpool has been overlooked in the title race in recent weeks as they have only made one summer addition so far in Ibrahima Konate, but Klopp will know the backing of a full stadium and having key players fully fit will make all the difference.

"Fans think one or two signings can come in and change the whole landscape for a side, that can happen at times," said Josh Williams on the latest episode of Analysing Anfield.

"But I still think Liverpool are comfortably at the top of the Premier League title type stuff.

"When it comes to expectations for the season, I think that top four is almost a given unless something goes wrong.

"When it comes to going for the title, it’s almost as if some signings that are made between now and the end of the window could tip the balance, but I think Klopp will be going into this thinking we get back our crown this season.

"He won’t be going into it thinking we need to restabilise, or we need to get top four.

"It’s a really strong squad, people forget how strong the squad is."

In theory, Liverpool's squad is stronger than the one which secured a seventh Champions League and the Premier League title the following season.

Thiago Alcantara was getting to grips with the English league towards the end of the last campaign while Diogo Jota impressed during his injury-hit campaign.

While the Reds have lost the ever-present Gini Wijnaldum in the centre of midfield, it gives young star Harvey Elliott the chance to impress - something he has done in pre-season.

"I’m quietly optimistic. Going into the season this is still very much the same squad that got 97 points followed by 99 points the following season with the addition of Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara but minus Gini Wijnaldum," added Williams.

"Add Ibrahima Konate in there too. Considering that alongside the supporters back in the stadium which is huge particularly for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp regenerated after a summer break.

"Looking at the season I think Liverpool are being overlooked and it’s typical transfer market stuff.

"People are far too inclined to think about who’s done the best business and they think one or two signings can majorly change the landscape."
