What people earn on average in Edinburgh and Lothians - and how it compares to other areas

Figures have revealed the average income of people living and working in Edinburgh and the Lothians – and how it compares to other parts of Scotland.

With property prices, and of course the cost of a pint, steeper in the capital than some other areas we thought it would be interesting to see if salaries are higher too.

HM Revenue and Customs' latest figures for the tax year 2017 to 2018 show that the mean employment income in the City of Edinburgh was £32,600 with self employed people earning an average of £48,200.

The median number – so what the average Edinburgh person would typically earn – is £24,100, with the average self employed person making £14,600.

These difference in these sets of figures just goes to show there are some very high earners in the capital pushing the average up, and therefore the median figure is more reliable for looking at what your typical Edinburgh person takes home.

In Midlothian the median employment income was lower – at £22,800 – with the self-employed average at £14,400. In West Lothian the figure was £23,100 (£14,400 self employed) while it was £23,800 in East Lothian (£14,500 self employed).

The Edinburgh and East Lothian figures are higher than the Scottish median of £23,100 – although Aberdeen City (£26,100), Aberdeenshire (£27,100), East Renfrewshire (£27,700), Moray (£24,400) and Stirling (£24,400) all came in above the capital.

In Fife the average person was recorded as earning £22,700, and £14,200 for self-employed workers.

Across Scotland the lowest median employment income is in Orkney (£18,100) followed by Dumfries and Galloway (£19,700).

In Glasgow City the average is recorded as being £22,600.
